Character Expressions

Expressions let a character have more than one portrait, a happy face, a wary one, an angry one. When the Game Master writes a character’s line, it picks the expression that fits, and the portrait you see changes to match. Every character starts with a set of expressions, so this works with no setup.

Updating a character’s expressions

Open a character file and find the Expressions tab. You’ll see a row of squares, one per expression, under the character’s main image. From there you can:

  • Generate art for a single expression, or use Generate Expressions to fill in every empty one at once. Craft shows the cost before you confirm, and you can spend energy or credits.

  • Add your own expressions, rename them, or reset back to the starting set.

  • Remove the art for any expression to fall back to the character’s main portrait.

Uploading your own art

You don’t have to generate expressions in Craft. If you’d rather draw them yourself, or you already have art, make the images however you like off platform and upload one to each expression square. Uploaded images save with the file just like generated ones.

Expressions and cutouts

Expressions can also be generated as cutouts — full figures with the background removed — from the Visual Novel Mode section of project settings. With cutouts, characters stand in the scene itself instead of appearing in a portrait frame. See Visual Novel Mode for how each art tier is used during play.
