Player's Handbook · Chapter 7

Optional Pregnancy House Rule

This is an optional campaign house rule, not part of the official Fabula Ultima rules and not medical advice. Use it only if the group explicitly agrees, only for adult characters who can freely consent, and only when established biology makes conception possible. Keep sexual activity non-graphic. Respect safety boundaries, and fade out of intimate scenes when anyone prefers. No player character is presumed to consent to sex or pregnancy-related scenes.

Two separate checks

After consensual sex with protection, roll a d100 protection check:

d100Result
01–95Protection works; stop here.
96–100Protection fails; make the separate conception roll.

A protection failure does not guarantee pregnancy. Only after protection fails, roll d3: 1 means pregnancy; 2–3 means no pregnancy. If protection works, do not make a conception roll. The group may use a genuine randomizer, a real dice tool, or a player roll. Never treat an invented result as random; if there is no verifiable random method, say so and ask a player to roll or leave the check unresolved.

Detection and duration

Pregnancy is not detectable by the pregnant person until four full in-world weeks after conception under this rule. At or after that point, a medical check can reveal it. Confirmation and care depend on the medical capabilities established in the world; do not assume modern tests or treatment where they do not exist.

If pregnancy is established, roll d3 once for gestation length and record the result: 1 means 9 in-world months, 2 means 10 months, and 3 means 11 months. Record the conception date, earliest detection date, medical check and confirmation, one-time gestation result, and estimated due date in a Pregnancy Record. Do not reroll duration to suit the story or let pregnancy advance faster than the Campaign Clock.

At the first medical check, use the agreed d2 procedure to record the child's sex: 1 means female and 2 means male. This is a limited campaign convention for that check; it does not determine the child's future gender identity. Record relevant health and story developments only as they occur and in line with the world's medicine.

Choice and care

Pregnancy is never punishment for a failed roll. The pregnant person decides how their character responds, and the group should handle sensitive choices according to its boundaries. If conception is impossible or uncertain from established circumstances, ask rather than assume. Keep the record factual and respectful; it exists to preserve continuity, not to dictate anyone's choices.
