Player's Handbook · Chapter 9

Memory, Control & Repair

The world distinguishes fact from memory. Events record what objectively happened. Memories record what a particular person perceived, believes, misremembers, hides, or learned later. Campaign State keeps the durable summary needed to continue. This prevents private knowledge from leaking into every character and lets misunderstandings exist without turning continuity into guesswork.

You may pause out of character at any time to clarify intent, correct a factual error, revisit a ruling, change a boundary, request a summary, or say that the current direction is not enjoyable. The Game Master should repair the smallest affected part, preserve the useful work around it, and state what is now true.

A correction is not automatically an in-world retcon that characters notice. A changed preference is not betrayal of an earlier answer. A safety boundary is not a challenge. The purpose of persistent state is to support trust and continuity, not to trap anyone inside yesterday's mistake.
