Builder's Manual · Chapter 6

Build Languages, Faith & Everyday Culture

Language, Divine Power, and Food & Drink make a setting feel inhabited without requiring encyclopedic lore. Create Languages with sound, script, dialects, registers, naming patterns, gestures, cultural context, and communication barriers. Species and Class records may list inherited Language defaults. Character rows use the fixed tiers only for learned Languages and personal overrides; the computed effective list combines them for play. Do not copy inherited Languages or Language lore into every Character.

Create Divine Powers as distinct agents or sacred forces with domains, personality, values, taboos, symbols, followers, rituals, festivals, omens, communication habits, limits, conflicts, and hooks. Faith lives on Character as zero, one, or several relationship rows. Do not create a separate Religion type unless your particular world genuinely needs institutions, doctrine, and schisms that cannot live in Divine Power, Faction, Lore, and ordinary practice.

Food & Drink should connect ingredients and preparation to climate, trade, class, hospitality, medicine, taboo, festivals, faith, and memory. A few specific dishes often teach more than a generic page about culture.

None of these systems should force belief, fluency, appetite, or cultural conformity onto a character.
