Player's Handbook · Chapter 2

Rolling Your Stats

Four numbers, and not one of them you get to keep — only what the dice say you're worth.

Your Stats

Every GRVNT has four Stats, and every one of them is a modifier, not a score.

  • Toughness — resisting shock, gas, cold, heat.
  • Agility — defence, sneaking, avoiding explosions.
  • Presence — shooting, perceiving things, using War Scrolls.
  • Strength — melee, throwing, carrying requisitions.

Rolling Your Stats

Roll 3d6 for each Stat and match the result on the table below. The 3d6 result is used only at the moment of creation — once the character is made, it is discarded. Only the associated Stat value stays with you.

3d6 ResultStat
1–4−3
5–6−2
7–8−1
9–120
13–14+1
15–16+2
17–20+3

A Stat can never rise above +6 or fall below −3, no matter what a later Promotion or special effect promises.

Making Tests

When the outcome of a situation is uncertain, a test is made against a variable Difficulty Rating (DR), set by the GM. To test success or failure, roll a d20, add or subtract your relevant Stat, and compare to the DR — if the result is greater than or equal to the DR, you succeed.

d20 ± Stat vs DR — success on a roll of DR or higher.

NPCs don't use Stats at all; they roll a plain d20 against the DR.

Examples

  • Fire your rifle at an enemy — test Presence DR 12
  • Avoid incoming mortar shells — test Agility DR 12
  • Resist SHOCK — test Toughness DR 14
  • Bayonet an enemy grvnt behind partial cover — test Strength DR 14
