Builder's Manual · Chapter 2

NPC Stat Blocks

The enemy is never just a number on a page — but between battles, a number on a page is all they are.

The Standard Stat Block

An NPC stat block is usually made up of:

  • Name — what they're called in the mud
  • HP — hit points
  • Morale — their score on the Morale roll (see Resting, Reaction & Morale in the Player's Handbook)
  • Armor — if any
  • Weapon — if any

Combatants vs Civilians

The average health and morale of a soldier NPC will be higher than that of a civilian or weak NPC. Soldiers are trained, hardened, and harder to break — civilians break early and run.

Averages

The average health of a combatant is between 4 and 8. The average morale of a combatant is the same — between 4 and 8.

Exceptions

There are, of course, exceptions depending on the character. A shell-shocked conscript might have HP 6 but Morale 2. A fanatical officer might have Morale 9. A child scavenger might have HP 2. Build each stat block for the creature, not the average.

Example

Grunt — HP 6, Morale 6, Armor —, Weapon Cvlt .45

Starving Conscript — HP 3, Morale 3, Armor —, Weapon Entrenching Tool

Crusher — HP 8, Morale 8, Armor tier 3, Weapon — (it is the weapon)
