Player's Handbook · Chapter 7

Growing

There is no experience, no levels and nothing to spend.

Your character gains Abilities and Gear because of things that happened to them. You trained, you studied, you were injured, you were given something, you spent a season doing the work. Tell the Game Master what your character has been doing, and if the story supports it, it goes on your sheet.

Nobody is counting sessions or measuring progress. The Game Master decides, and a good one will be generous when you have earned it and honest when you have not.

Some Abilities form named chains, and those are the one place where order matters. You cannot hold World Class Chef without Expert Chef. The later links in a chain are meant to represent years or a genuinely extraordinary opportunity, so expect them to be a story rather than a formality.

Abilities can also be lost. An implant removed, a gift withdrawn, an injury that ends a career. That should never happen without warning.
