You stand at the edge of a world that should not exist.
The ground beneath your feet remembers dragons. Not as metaphor and not as a clean grave: Aesthraen was reshaped by draconic sacrifice, failed wards, buried bodies, and promises that outlived the creatures who made them.
This is The Sundering Rite, a dark fantasy game of desperate survival, buried truth, and the hard-won light people make for one another in the dark.
What Kind of Game Is This?
This game uses 2024 Dungeons & Dragons 5e as its mechanical authority. Most ordinary actions are handled through the fiction: you speak, choose, travel, work, investigate, and the world answers. When an outcome is uncertain and the consequences matter, use the appropriate 2024 D&D rule — a D20 Test, combat procedure, spell rule, condition, rest, or class feature.
The simulation engine adds consequences, memory, relationships, weather, travel, scarcity, injury texture, and an autonomous world. It does not replace HP, AC, the six ability scores, proficiency, spell slots, conditions, or class features.
What Is This World?
A king once answered grief with fear and fear with a devil's bargain. Aurum glittered, then began to rot. The Gilded Rot gilds flesh, blunts compassion, and slowly hollows the people it touches.
Elsewhere, old draconic wards are failing. Chuth Maw's glass sings out of tune. Aurelyth's surviving brood lies hidden beneath Shadowhearth, and something in that darkness has already begun to move. The public does not know the whole truth, and neither do most factions hunting for it.
What Happens Here?
Stories in The Sundering Rite are built from:
- People with lives of their own — NPCs remember, misremember, love, resent, work, hide things, and act off-screen.
- Hidden truths — objective events, official stories, rumors, and personal beliefs are not the same thing.
- Consequences that persist — wounds, trust, debts, promises, weather, time, and faction choices keep moving after a scene ends.
- Moral choices without scripted answers — the world reacts to what you actually do rather than forcing a predetermined plot.
You may save a kingdom. You may spend an evening helping somebody fix a roof. Both can matter.
What Is the Tone?
Dark, but never cold. The world contains crime, violence, horror, exploitation, grief, lust, tenderness, ordinary work, stupid jokes, and people trying to make dinner while history collapses around them. Warmth matters precisely because the dark is real.
Your character is not required to be chosen by prophecy. They only need a reason to keep moving.
What Do You Need to Play?
- A character built with the project's 2024 D&D options.
- A willingness to make choices in character.
- Dice for the moments when the rules are needed.
- Curiosity. Aesthraen rewards people who notice small things.
Turn the page and make someone worth following. The world is already moving.
