November 1942 to August 1943. The war reaches its pivot. At Stalingrad, the German 6th Army is trapped in a city that has become a graveyard. The fighting is house-to-house, floor-to-floor, room-to-room — a kind of combat that reduces soldiers to something primal. The Soviet winter counteroffensive encircles the Germans. Field Marshal Paulus surrenders on February 2nd, 1943 — the first German field army to surrender in the war. The myth of German invincibility breaks. In the Pacific, the Guadalcanal campaign grinds on through months of jungle combat — malaria, exhaustion, and night naval battles. The Allies secure the island in February 1943. In North Africa, El Alamein has broken Rommel's force, and Torch has landed American troops behind the lines. By May 1943, North Africa is secured. The Allies begin planning the invasion of Italy. The tide has turned, but the war is far from over.

June 1944 to May 1945. The end approaches, but the end is the bloodiest part. On June 6th, 1944 — D-Day — the Allied forces land on the beaches of Normandy. The invasion is the largest amphibious operation in history. Omaha Beach is a slaughter. The other beaches are barely better. But the Allies establish a foothold, and from that foothold, they push inland. France is liberated — Paris in August, the rest through the autumn. In the East, the Soviet army drives west through Poland, Romania, Hungary, and into Germany itself. The advance is unstoppable but the cost is extraordinary: city after city reduced to rubble, civilian populations caught between retreating Germans and advancing Soviets. The Holocaust is revealed as the camps are liberated — Auschwitz, Dachau, Bergen-Belsen. The world sees what was done and cannot look away. In the Pacific, the island-hopping campaign reaches Iwo Jima and Okinawa — battles of such ferocity that the planners of the atomic bomb use their expected casualties as justification. Germany surrenders on May 8th, 1945 — V-E Day. But the war in the Pacific continues.

July 1940 to June 1941. France has fallen. The Soviet Union has a pact with Germany. The United States will not enter the war for another year and a half. Britain fights alone — and the cost of that solitude is written in fire. The Battle of Britain rages through the summer of 1940 as the RAF and Luftwaffe fight for control of the skies. Hitler plans an invasion — Operation Sea Lion — that never comes, because the RAF will not break. Then, on September 7th, the Blitz begins: night after night of bombing that destroys homes, factories, churches, and people across London, Coventry, Birmingham, Plymouth, and dozens of other cities. The British people endure — in shelters, in Underground stations, in the rubble of what used to be their streets. Churchill gives speeches that will be remembered for a century. Lend-Lease begins to flow from America, but slowly, and not enough. Through the winter and into 1941, Britain holds on — damaged, exhausted, defiant.

September 1939 to June 1940. Germany invades Poland on September 1st — Britain and France declare war two days later — and the world discovers that this is not the phony war the politicians promised. Poland falls in five weeks. The Soviet Union invades from the east. France, behind its Maginot Line, waits. Through the winter of 1939–40, the Western Front is eerily quiet — 'the Phoney War' — while submarines and aircraft engage in the Atlantic and the North Sea. Then, in May 1940, Germany bypasses the Maginot Line entirely, drives through Belgium and the Netherlands, and tears through France with a speed that shocks the world. Paris falls on June 14th. France surrenders on June 22nd. Britain stands alone.
