What You're Building On

You've cloned a system with a specific spine. Before you add to it, know what the spine is — most "improvements" that fail do so by fighting one of these pillars.

The pillars

Fiction first. Rules exist to resolve uncertainty in the story, not to gate what a character may attempt. There is no master list of skills or spells; a player states what they do and how they can do it, and a move plus 2d6 decides. When you add content, you are adding fiction with a trigger, not a new permission slot.
AI-first, context-budgeted. The Game Master is an AI reading files during play. Its attention is finite, so the design pushes durable truth into small, well-typed files and keeps standing instructions short. Every file you add either earns its place in context or stays searchable until it's relevant. Bloat is the enemy.
Universal, genre-neutral. One rules core runs fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and the rest. The five stats, the resolution, and the basic moves never change per genre; only their labels and examples do. Content that only works in one genre belongs in a genre module, not the core.
State is authoritative; prose is presentation. What is true lives in data (a character's Harm, a world's state, a consequence). The narration reports that truth; it never invents it. This single rule is what makes persistence trustworthy — see the persistence chapter.

The reader's promise

A player was told: your character, companions, relationships, and the worlds you touched persist. Everything you build has to keep that promise. A new mission, move, or NPC that quietly resets state, or that can only be understood inside one genre, breaks the thing people came for.

The Premise

One Character. Infinite Worlds.

You are an agent of **The Meridian**, a headquarters between realities where anomalies from across the multiverse appear on the mission board.

Step through the Gate into cursed fantasy forests, haunted modern cities, ruined post-apocalyptic worlds, alien colonies, strange futures, and places that do not fit any one genre at all.

The worlds change, but your story does not reset. Your character, companions, relationships, promises, discoveries, and the consequences of your choices persist from mission to mission. The people you save remember you. The places you change stay changed. Problems you leave behind may still be waiting when you return.

Storybound is a **fiction-first 2d6 narrative RPG run by an AI Game Master**, built around player freedom, meaningful choices, persistent relationships, and a multiverse shaped by what you actually do.
