Building Creatures and Entities
In Root and Stem, you don't author a creature from a blank page — you classify it and scale it. Every moving thing in the world is at least a Creature, and its power and presence are set by two axes you already know from the rules: Class and Tier. This chapter shows you how to place a monster, beast, or being on that map and bring it to life with stats that interoperate cleanly with the rest of the system.
Class first, then Tier
The Universal Class and Tier System (see that chapter of the rules) sorts every thing into a Class. For builders, the important line is the Movement Rule: anything that moves of its own will is, at minimum, a Creature — from a house-fly to a great wyrm. A living tree that stays put is Nature; the moment it can move, it becomes a Creature. When it dies, Creation–Entropy reclassifies it as an Object.
A Creature's mind is set by its INT score, not by fiat:
- INT 3 or more, with WIS 1 or more → the creature is self-willed enough to be Character-grade. It can choose, learn, and be reasoned with. Goblins, people, and certain dragons qualify.
- INT below 3 → the creature acts on instinct and trained response. It is still a Creature, just not a Character, and it cannot learn disciplines or unlock Mana of its own will.
A pebble can hold more magicule potential than a dragon, but that never raises its INT. INT and WIS are Root Stats earned through XP.
The Tier scale
Tier is the shared ladder of magnitude. Use it to size every creature you build.
| Tier | Rough scale | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | Trivial | a pebble, a leaf, a coin |
| 1 | Frail / tiny | a mouse, a pane of glass |
| 2 | Small / light | a chicken, a wooden door |
| 3 | Human scale | an average person, a wolf |
| 4 | Strong / heavy | a soldier, a boulder, an oak door |
| 5 | Large / durable | a bear, a war-golem |
| 6 | Huge / monstrous | an elephant, a young dragon |
| 7 | Colossal | a great wyrm, a castle wall |
| 8 | Titanic | an elder dragon, a cathedral |
| 9 | Primordial | a leviathan |
| 10+ | Cosmic | gods, world-serpents |
Stats and Material Tier
Give every creature the six Root Stats — STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA — starting with 15 points, 0–6 each, with a modifier of floor((score−5)/2). Lean into CON: it is durability. A creature's toughness is written as its Material Tier, where MT = CON + Tier (+ any density or armor bonus). Heavy CON means a creature shrugs off impact. Its Element — Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, or Magicules — describes where its nature sits on the Creation–Entropy scale.
The Pebble Principle
Don't let Tier fool you. The Pebble Principle says a small thing with enough Force and Precision can punch far above its Tier:
Effective Strike = (Force × force-mult) + (Precision × precision-mult)
It penetrates when the strike meets the target's Material Tier. A thrown pebble (Tier 0), hurled true and hard or boosted by Mana, can put a hole in a Tier 7 wall. Build your creatures knowing even the lowliest can surprise.
Vessels and attunement
Powerful beings are often Vessels — any Class that holds enough Magicules to be enchanted, awakened, or act as a conduit. A vessel gains a Mana Pool for Casting and usually holds one Creation and one Entropy attunement point, with casters adding a third in the Mind. Work that potential into your biggest creatures.
