Player's Handbook · Chapter 2

Making a Character

Your character is built from four choices stacked in a fixed order — ancestry, background, class, and where your boosts land. Each one hands you a piece: ancestry gives you a body, background gives you a past, class gives you a job. The full procedure with every sheet field named is in @Missing file.

Step 1 — Ancestry and heritage

Pick one of eight ancestries (@Missing file and the rest) and one heritage under it — 41 in all. Your ancestry sets starting Hit Points, size, Speed, senses, and languages, and grants attribute boosts and a flaw. Then take one ancestry feat into ancestryFeat1. Heritage is the fine grain: two dwarves with different heritages are genuinely different characters.

Step 2 — Background

Forty backgrounds, from @Missing file onward. A background grants two attribute boosts, trains one skill and one Lore, and hands you a skill feat. Choose it and the sheet fills backgroundSkillFeat in for you.

Step 3 — Class

Eight classes with full level 1–20 progressions: @Missing file, @Missing file, @Missing file, and five more. The class file sets your key attribute, Hit Points per level, your starting proficiencies, and your trained skills. Most classes then want a subclass — a muse, doctrine, druidic order, hunter's edge, racket, patron, or arcane school — and the picker only shows you your own class's options. Clerics choose a domain too. Your subclass is what unlocks your focus spell.

Step 4 — Boosts

Attributes are Remaster modifiers; there are no 3–18 scores. Everyone starts at +0, flaws are −1, and each boost is +1 (above +4 boosts go partial — two of those make one point). After ancestry, background, and class have had their say, apply four free boosts to four different attributes. A normal level 1 array lands at +4 / +3 / +2 / +1 / +0 / +0.

Step 5 — Finish

Max HP computes itself: ancestry HP + level × (class HP + Constitution). Spend your 15 gp on gear. If you cast, set your tradition, your slots, and your spells.

Or read a finished one

Three level 1 characters ship with this project: @Missing file, @Missing file, and @Missing file. Open any of them to see where every number ended up.

There is no guided creation wizard here — you fill the sheet yourself, in the order above. The compensation is that the arithmetic is not yours: 67 of the sheet's fields compute from the other 132, so once ancestry, class, gear, and feats are linked, your AC, saves, all sixteen skills, your attack lines, and your spell DC are simply there.
