Player's Handbook · Chapter 5

Magic

This project carries 473 spells across the four traditions — arcane, divine, occult, primal — with heightening entries, plus focus spells and cantrips. Your class decides which list you draw from and which attribute powers it. The full rules are in @Missing file.

Slots and ranks

Spells have ranks 1 through 10. A full caster gains a new rank at every odd level: rank 1 at level 1, rank 2 at level 3, rank 3 at level 5, on up to rank 9 at 17. Rank 10 comes only from a capstone.

  • Prepared casters — cleric, druid, witch, wizard — commit specific spells to specific slots during Daily Preparations.
  • Spontaneous casters — bard among them — know a repertoire and spend any slot of the right rank on any spell they know.

Either way, the sheet tracks slots per rank and how many you have burned, and preparation resets them.

Cantrips are not a consolation prize

Cantrips cost no slot and heighten automatically to half your level, rounded up. At level 9 your cantrip is casting as a rank 5 spell. They are the reason a caster never runs dry.

Heightening

Cast a spell in a higher slot and its heightened entries apply — "(+1)" entries scale per rank above base, "(Xth)" entries kick in at that rank. @Missing file in a rank 4 slot is a different spell than @Missing file in a rank 1 slot, and @Missing file is a fine example of a spell that never stops being worth a bigger slot. Prepared casters must prepare at the higher rank; spontaneous casters heighten freely only their signature spells.

Focus spells

Your subclass grants focus spells — a cleric's font, a druid's order magic, a wizard's school spell. They cost 1 Focus Point from a pool that maxes at 3, they heighten automatically like cantrips, and @Missing file — ten minutes of prayer, communion, or study — buys one back. A full night restores all of them. See @Missing file.

Casting in play

Casting is an activity, usually 2 of your 3 actions, and it usually carries the concentrate and manipulate traits. Manipulate can provoke. While stupefied, you need a flat check to cast at all or the spell is simply lost.

Spell attack rolls take the multiple attack penalty like any other attack. Spells that force a save use the four degrees — and against a damaging spell, the basic save ladder means a successful save still costs the target half. A caster's job is rarely to delete an enemy; it is to change the shape of the fight.
