The sky split open over the Central Continent three days ago. A teleportation catastrophe scattered thousands of people across the world. You were one of them.
You woke in a place you did not recognize, among strangers who spoke languages you barely understood, in a land where the sky burned yellow and the earth cracked beneath your feet. The world you knew — its cities, its people, its rules — is gone. What remains is this: survive, find your way, and perhaps discover what caused the catastrophe that tore your life apart.
This is Mushoku Tensei — a world of sword and sorcery, of ancient gods and demon beasts, of kingdoms at war and magic that bends the fabric of reality. It is a world where bonds between people carry a power that defies explanation, where love and loss shape destiny, and where even the smallest act of kindness can change the course of history.
What This Game Is
This is a tabletop roleplaying game using the D&D 5th Edition (2024) ruleset, modified for the world of Mushoku Tensei. You will create a character — a person with goals, fears, and a story waiting to be told — and join a party of adventurers navigating a world shattered by catastrophe.
Your Game Master (GM) describes the world around you. You decide what your character does. When the outcome is uncertain, you roll dice. The results shape the story — not just for you, but for everyone at the table.
What to Expect
This campaign follows six arcs, each set in a different location with its own challenges:
| Arc | Location | Level | Theme |
|---|
| 1. Biegoya | Demon Continent | 4 | Survival, first contact |
| 2. Refugees of Roa | Central Continent | 7 | Community, rescue missions |
| 3. Rikarisu | Demon Continent | 10 | Adventuring, guild ranks |
| 4. Millis | Millis Continent | 13 | Faith, investigation |
| 5. Ranoa Academy | Ranoa | 16 | Magic, mystery, competition |
| 6. Darius Estate | Shirone Kingdom | 19 | Espionage, climax |
Your character begins at Level 4 and grows to Level 19 over the course of the campaign. Each arc presents new threats, new allies, and new choices that shape the story.
What You Need
- A character. You can create one from scratch using the options in this handbook, or choose a pre-generated character offered at the start of the campaign.
- Dice. You will need a set of polyhedral dice: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20.
- Imagination. The most important tool. Everything else is details.
The Golden Rules
- Describe what you want to do. The GM tells you what happens. If the outcome is uncertain, you roll.
- Your character is yours. You decide their personality, goals, and choices. The GM decides how the world responds.
- Bond matters. The bonds between characters — friendship, rivalry, love — are not just flavor. They grant mechanical benefits and shape the story.
- Fail forward. Failure is not the end. It is a new direction. The best stories come from unexpected outcomes.
- Have fun. This is a game. If something makes you uncomfortable, speak up. The table is a safe space.
A Note on Tone
Mushoku Tensei deals with mature themes: trauma, redemption, loss, love, and the complicated process of growing as a person. These themes are handled with care and respect. The goal is emotional resonance, not exploitation. Your character's journey is theirs to shape — and yours to experience.
