Building Investigators
Investigators are built from characteristics, derived values, an occupation, skills, equipment, and a personal reason to continue. Keep derived values calculated from their sources rather than asking creators to maintain duplicate numbers.
The core formulas are: Hit Points floor((CON + SIZ) ÷ 10), minimum 1; starting/current Sanity POW capped by 99 − Cthulhu Mythos; Magic Points floor(POW ÷ 5); Luck POW × 2; Initiative and Dodge DEX × 2; and Move Rate from the DEX + SIZ table. Parry is half the relevant Melee skill.
An occupation provides a coherent skill list, an appropriate point pool, a Credit Rating expectation, and at most one bounded fictional permission. Personal development is EDU × 2. Skills use the canonical percentile ladder: 01 Critical, one-fifth Extreme, one-half Hard, full target Regular, and the current fumble range.
Equipment should solve practical problems without replacing decisions. Weapons and armor belong in reusable compendium types; investigators should reference canonical gear rather than copying damage, protection, or prices into their sheets. Advancement is incremental and Mythos knowledge reduces the Sanity ceiling point for point.
