Player's Handbook · Chapter 2

Making a Character That Belongs to This World

Character creation begins with the world's actual rules, not a universal checklist. A supernatural setting may offer species, bloodline, path, or power source. A mundane setting should not invent those questions. A classless world should not force a class. OMEGA establishes the active World Ruleset first, then presents only installed, active, compatible, player-selectable options.

Describe a person before optimizing a sheet: identity, ordinary life, capabilities, limitations, wants, fears, obligations, contradictions, relationships, and boundaries. Your answers are authorship. The compiler may organize them into the Character schema, but it may not add a secret identity, moral position, attraction, inner monologue, consent, or emotional conclusion that you did not provide.

Mechanics are references to real definitions. Resources, attributes, abilities, techniques, conditions, and advancement rules come from the linked Ruleset and Mechanic Packages. If a concept is valid fiction but no installed mechanic supports it, the concept remains in prose and becomes a pending mechanic request. It does not become a broken reference or an improvised permanent rule. A builder can later map that request without discarding the idea.

The sheet separates definitions from current state. The definition says what a resource means and its bounds; your Character stores the current value. That makes rules reusable while keeping one owner for the number that changes in play. Computed values are read-only projections and should never be edited as if they were source state.

Characters can have different cognition depth. An ordinary person may need only a Character record. A recurring person may gain bounded Living Memory and Relationship Profiles. A central non-player character may warrant an Inner World Profile when durable private choice truly matters. A player character receives deep interior state only when the player explicitly authors it. Complexity is earned by play; it is not assigned to every face in a crowd.
