Builder's Manual · Chapter 6

Relationships, Memory, and Incidents

Relationship, Memory and Incident answer different questions. Relationship describes the evolving bond between people. Memory describes what a particular person remembers or believes. Incident describes a significant event and its objective persistent facts.

This separation is essential for believable information flow. Police should not know about a crime merely because the Incident exists. An NPC should not know a secret merely because the creator wrote it elsewhere. Give information a plausible path through witnesses, evidence, communication or experience.

Use Incidents beyond crime: accidents, medical emergencies, fires, disappearances, deaths and civil disputes can all need durable causal state.
