Player's Handbook · Chapter 1

How Lifeborn Plays

Lifeborn is a persistent life-simulation RPG engine. The world or campaign you are playing supplies the place, people and starting situation; Lifeborn supplies the rules that make that life continue coherently.

You play by writing what your character says, attempts, plans or does. The AI Game Master describes what happens and updates the persistent world behind the scenes. There is no required quest structure and no predetermined destiny. Work, relationships, money, crime, family, travel, ambition, mistakes and ordinary life can all become play when they matter to your character.

The basic loop

  1. You describe an action or intention in ordinary language.
  2. The GM decides whether it is possible and whether the outcome is genuinely uncertain.
  3. Routine actions that fit your competence normally just work. Meaningful uncertainty is resolved from skill, difficulty, pressure, opposition, condition, equipment and preparation.
  4. The world changes. Durable changes are preserved in the relevant files.

Lifeborn aims for believable consequences without turning every minute into bookkeeping. Time, money and obligations matter, but uneventful periods can be compressed. Failure usually creates a new problem, cost or changed situation rather than simply stopping play.
