Nen Basics & Character Creation

Welcome, future Hunter. Everyone has aura — Hunters weaponize it. This chapter takes you from blank rookie to licensed Hunter in 20 minutes.

The engine (one rule)

Roll combat.attack + Attribute + Ren dice (d10s), 7+ = success vs defender's combat.defense + Attribute + stance. Count net successes. Damage = net × (1 + floor(Ren/3)) + Hatsu bonus. Ties chip for 1. combat.attack/defense are your trained fighting skill — never skip them.

Example: Gon (attack 5 + Strength 6 + Ren 3 = 14 dice) rolls ~4 successes vs a defender's ~3. Net 1 × 2 = 2 damage, +10 if Jajanken Rock lands.

The six Nen types

Enhancement (body/aura up) – Transmutation (change aura quality: electricity, rubber) – Emission (project/throw aura) – Conjuration (create objects) – Manipulation (control things/people) – Specialization (rule-breakers). Water Divination: leaf floats on water; Enhancers make water overflow, Transmuters change taste, Emitters change color, Conjurers grow impurity, Manipulators move the leaf, Specialists do something weird. Affinity cost: your type = listed cost. Adjacent on the hexagon = +50% (round up). Two away = double. Opposite (Enhancement↔Manipulation etc.) = triple. This is why Kurapika (Conjurer) pays fairly for chains but Gon would pay triple for them.

Make a Hunter (5 steps, 20 min)

Concept + Potential: pick who you are. Potential 1-2 (normal), 3 (prodigy), 4-5 (monster like Gon/Killua — needs GM sign-off). Potential caps Ren/Control ceiling.
Physical (20 pts, max 7 at start): Strength, Agility, Durability, Perception, Wits. Rookie baseline is all 3s.
Aura: Reserve = 20 + Ren×5. Start Ren 1, Control 1, Talent 1-5 (learning speed, not power). Copy <@blank-rookie> if unsure.
Nen type: start Unawakened. Water Divination (free, once, needs calm water + leaf) locks it. No pre-game Hatsu.
First technique: everyone starts with Ten only. Earn the rest in play (see Training chapter). Starting HP 20+, Speed 6, Attack/Defense 2-3.
