Player's Handbook · Chapter 6

Time & the Living World

Time passes, and the world moves with it.

Work takes time. Travel takes time. Recovery takes time. Relationships deepen slowly. Households eat and save. Businesses trade. Rulers govern. Seasons turn. News crawls along roads and rivers. Opportunities appear, change, expire — sometimes while you are looking elsewhere.

The world continues even when you are not watching it.

What this feels like

  • You leave the village for a month and return to find a marriage, a death, a new roof, a changed price.
  • A job you ignored goes to someone else.
  • A rumor you heard weeks ago turns out to have been wrong — or partly right.
  • A quiet season passes with nothing dramatic at all. That is normal.

Quiet is not failure. Months or even years can pass without a major event. Steady work, shared meals, ordinary routines — that is the world working as it should.

How to live in it

  • Pay attention to time. A journey of three days means three days of wages, food, absence, and risk.
  • Do not wait for the world to entertain you. It will not arrange itself around you. Pursue things; people, work, and places respond to pursuit.
  • Do not fear missing things. You will miss things. Everyone does. What you catch will be yours because you were there, not because the story required it.
  • Think ahead. Winter comes. Debts come due. Children grow. Plant, save, mend, and maintain before need arrives.

You are part of this world, not its center. It does not freeze when you look away, and it does not perform when you look at it. Live inside it.
