Player's Handbook · Chapter 12

Property, Land & Business

Land endures. Businesses trade. Neither belongs to you until the world agrees it does.

The separations that matter

  • A property is a holding you have lawful control of — a field, cottage, workshop parcel.
  • A location is the physical place where things happen. Related, but not the same.
  • A business is an economic operation — milling, brewing, smithing, selling. It is not the building it works in.

And within property itself: the owner is not necessarily the occupant; how it is held (tenure) is its own fact; special rights (grazing, milling, passage) belong to whoever holds them. Living somewhere never makes you its owner. Working somewhere never makes you its owner.

A business's owner is not necessarily its operator. The person who runs the shop daily may not own it — and owning it does not mean you know how to run it.

Getting land and livelihood

Property may come by purchase, rent, grant, gift, inheritance, marriage settlement where your world's law provides, or other local means — never automatically. Each path has its own requirements: a willing seller, a lawful grant, an actual inheritance, agreed terms, real payment.

A business needs believable foundations: funding from a real source, premises or a place to work, tools, stock, supplies, and a way to actually operate. Occupation alone founds nothing — a baker without flour, oven, and customers owns a hope, not a bakery.

Neither land nor business arrives complete. A field does not plow itself; a shop does not fill its own shelves. Ownership is the beginning of work, not the end of it.

Costs and income

Land carries obligations: rents, dues, upkeep, taxes where your world imposes them. Businesses consume and earn: stock, wages, expenses, revenue. None of this runs on its own — it runs on your attention, your coin, and your world's conditions.

In Play

Want land? Find who holds it, learn the local terms, and make a real arrangement. Want a business? Start small, secure premises and supplies, and serve actual customers. Read every agreement as carefully as your character would — the world will hold you to it.
