Goals, Ambition & Making a Life
Hearth & Crown gives you no quest log. It gives you something better: a life you choose.
Want anything — or nothing
You might pursue employment, wealth, mastery of a craft, love, marriage, children, land, a business, standing, office, service, travel, discovery, security, justice, influence — or simple stability. You might also want no great thing at all, and live meaningfully through work, family, friendship, and seasons. Both are valid play. The game never requires a heroic arc.
A goal is a direction, not a contract. You may pursue, pause, change, or abandon anything without penalty. Only the consequences of actions already taken stay with you.
The world does not reorganize around your wishes
Wanting a farm does not create a farm, a seller, money, or permission. The world holds what it holds; people keep their own plans. An opportunity you want may go to someone else. A patron may die. Prices may change. War may interrupt everything.
Caring about something does not cause it. The game may give your interests narrative attention, but never bends truth toward your success. You must still find the path, pay the price, persuade the people, and survive the outcome.
That is not cruelty — it is what makes achievement real. When you finally hold the land, win the office, master the craft, or build the household, no one arranged it for you. You did it.
How to pursue anything
- Name what you want. Privately or aloud — clarity helps.
- Learn what is true. Who holds it? What does it cost? What does law require? Who stands in the way?
- Act. Work, save, ask, apply, travel, train, befriend, propose.
- Accept the result. Success, partial success, delay, failure, reversal — all are play. Adjust and continue.
In Play
Start where you are. A farmhand who wants land first needs steady work, savings, a reputation for reliability, and knowledge of who might sell. Each step is playable, each step matters, and none of them needs a quest-giver's permission.
