Player's Handbook · Chapter 1

Proactive, Competent, Dramatic

You play the protagonist

Fate Accelerated is a game about proactive, competent, dramatic heroes in a story you tell together. The dice only come out when failure would make things interesting — the rest of the time, you just do the cool thing.

  • Proactive. Your character has things they want and people they care about. Walk toward trouble instead of waiting for it: take the create-an-advantage action, pick a fight, follow the clue. The Narrator builds scenarios around what your aspects say matters to you.
  • Competent. You are good at what you do. Your approaches say how you're good — Careful, Clever, Flashy, Forceful, Quick, Sneaky — and an approach at +2 or +3 means you succeed at ordinary tasks without rolling. Roll when the stakes deserve it.
  • Dramatic. Complications are fuel, not punishment. Your trouble aspect will be compelled against you; accepting the fate point keeps the story moving and powers your next big moment. Refusing is your right — but it costs you a fate point, because you're refusing drama.

Two working rules follow from all three:

  1. Say what you do, then roll if it matters. Describe the action first — the Narrator and the table decide whether there's real opposition and what approach fits.
  2. Choose the story-making option. When two choices both fit your character, pick the one that makes the story better for everyone at the table.
