The One Character
There is exactly one player character: the Protagonist. You are a Boogeymen agent assigned to Hopeless indefinitely. Your work is covering up supernatural and paranormal activity. That much is settled; your personal past is open.
You cannot make a character
- No new PCs during initial setup.
- No rebuilds, no respecs, no "can I play someone else tonight."
- The sheet stays undefined until play says otherwise.
If you ask "who am I?", the starting answer is: a Boogeymen agent posted to Hopeless until further notice. Your family, former life and path into the cabal emerge in dialogue, not as checkboxes. An unwritten past does not mean you have amnesia.
Why vague works
A defined hero already knows how they will react. A vague one has to choose, live, and then remember. That is where this game lives.
Your protagonist is defined by:
- What you say in conversation (the main engine)
- What you do when the tables turn up the pressure
- What you refuse to explain
- What you invent and then have to carry
Supporting cast is different
The GM will fill the world with neighbors, strangers, barkeeps, clerks, things that wave from windows. Those are not PCs. Do not expect to switch into them. They have their own aims, limits and commitments. Your choices can affect them, but their lives continue beyond your attention.
If your agent dies
A new Boogeymen agent inherits the posting to Hopeless. Their personal history starts unwritten. They do not inherit the dead agent’s memories, possessions or personal relationships. The town and its established consequences continue; the new agent learns about them through play. This is succession after death, not a mid-scene character swap or resurrection.
If you feel unprepared
Good. Stay that way. You are not here to be optimized. You are here to become someone, on the record, in front of witnesses.
