Builder's Manual · Chapter 1

Design Intent

This project is a narrative-first event-table system about a single Boogeymen agent. The Boogeymen are a shadow cabal dedicated to covering up supernatural and paranormal activity. The agent is assigned to Hopeless and stuck there until further notice. Keep this role and posting fixed while leaving their personal history open to invention in play. If you are extending it, preserve these intents or you will rebuild a different game.

Pillars (do not break)

Narrative and character-based reactions — NPC wants/fears/lies, not combat math.
Dice call event tables — the GM does not invent plot from a vacuum.
Memory is the real system — invented details and drawn events become canon and resurface.
Backstory is invented in dialogue — rewarded by filling absurdity blanks that later fire as backstory quests.
One vague protagonist — no character creation, no second PCs.

Tone stack

Psychological horror + noir + folklore + dark comedy. Blend, do not average. See the Player's Handbook chapter Tone at the Table for the house style; this manual assumes you keep it.

What the platform already does

GM Harness V2 keeps memory, the scene, the map, clocks, and objectives. Do not add tracker files, memory files, or bookkeeping instructions. The GM Instructions (settings.gameOptions) hold the rules. Event tables are ordinary files the GM looks up.

Where the rules live

Surface	Holds
GM Instructions	Live rules the GM follows every turn
Player's Handbook	How to play at the table
Builder's Manual	How to fill and extend tables (this book)
Design docs (`/Design/`)	System brief + generation prompts
Event Table files	Blank slots waiting for your text

Next: Filling the Tables.

Doubt is an expensive commodity in these parts

MARVEL AT THE SCENIC RAVEN'S GORGE, TREMBLE AT THE HAUNTED HARLOWE FARM, BEWARE THE GHOST CLOWNS OF THE COUNTY FAIRGROUND, AND YOU CAN EVEN TRY TO LEAVE!!

You heard about these weirdo's; the boogeymen, the screw-ups, drunks that get the "woo woo" shit like chasing UFOs. It's a great way to quantify how badly you crapped the bed though, now you gotta hide under it- keeping shit covered up.

It's Hopeless from here, Hopeless Bradley Co., keep your head down, keep the peace- maybe you'll get assigned somewhere else soon?
