Creating Your Character
Building a character in Star Trek Adventures is a seven-step process. By the end, you'll have a fully realised Starfleet officer ready for their first mission.
Step 1: Choose a Species
Select a species from the Species catalogue. Each species provides:
- Attribute Bonuses — adjustments to your base attribute scores.
- Discipline Bonuses — adjustments to your base discipline scores.
- Special Abilities — unique traits and talents.
Species bonuses are applied after you assign your base attribute and discipline scores.
Step 2: Assign Attributes
You have 6 Attributes, each representing a core aspect of your character:
| Attribute | Represents |
|---|---|
| Control | Precision, poise, fine motor skill, composure |
| Daring | Boldness, bravery, initiative, risk-taking |
| Fitness | Physical health, endurance, raw strength |
| Insight | Perception, awareness, intuition, empathy |
| Presence | Charisma, willpower, leadership, confidence |
| Reason | Logic, intellect, analytical skill, memory |
Assigning:
- Start each Attribute at 7.
- Distribute 18 additional points among them.
- No Attribute may exceed 12 (before species bonuses).
This gives you a total Attribute pool of 60 points (6 × 7 + 18).
Step 3: Assign Disciplines
You have 6 Disciplines, each representing a field of professional training:
| Discipline | Focus |
|---|---|
| Command | Leadership, strategy, authority |
| Conn | Navigation, piloting, alertness |
| Engineering | Technical systems, repairs, operations |
| Security | Combat, threat assessment, tactics |
| Science | Research, analysis, scientific method |
| Medicine | Healing, diagnosis, biological sciences |
Assigning:
- Start each Discipline at 1.
- Distribute 12 additional points among them.
- No Discipline may exceed 5 (before species bonuses).
This gives you a total Discipline pool of 18 points (6 × 1 + 12).
Step 4: Pick Values
Your Values are personal beliefs and principles — core statements that define who your character is. They serve a mechanical purpose: you can invoke a Value during play to gain Determination.
Choose 2 Values. Examples:
- "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few."
- "I will not abandon my crew."
- "Knowledge is worth any risk."
- "My honour is my life."
- "Every life has value."
- "There is always a solution."
Each Value is a statement your character genuinely believes. When you act in accordance with a Value and face a difficult choice, the GM may allow you to Invoke it.
Step 5: Pick Focuses
Focuses are areas of expertise — specific skills or knowledge domains where your character excels. When you make a skill check using a relevant Focus, you add +2 to each die in your pool.
Choose 4 Focuses:
| Discipline | Sample Focuses |
|---|---|
| Command | Diplomacy, Inspiration, Morale |
| Conn | Piloting, Alertness, Shipboard Ops |
| Engineering | Communications, Warp Field, Transporters |
| Security | Energy Weapons, Hand-to-Hand, Stealth |
| Science | Computer Ops, Xenobiology, Physics |
| Medicine | Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Pharmacology |
Step 6: Pick Talents
Talents are special abilities — extraordinary skills or traits that set your character apart. Choose 2 Talents from the Talent list. Some Talents have prerequisites (minimum Attribute or Discipline values).
Step 7: Background and Career Event
Write a brief Background (2–3 sentences) covering where your character grew up, what motivated them to join Starfleet, and a formative experience.
Then choose a Career Event:
- Joined Starfleet against family wishes.
- Survived a disaster that claimed many lives.
- Developed a new technology or procedure.
- Led a successful first contact.
- Was decorated for bravery.
- Faced a moral dilemma that changed their perspective.
