You stand at the edge of a world that should not exist.
The ground beneath your feet was once a dragon. Not a grave — a sacrifice. When the old world broke, the great wyrms gave their bodies to become the mountains, the rivers, the soil that feeds you. Every breath of wind through these valleys is a dragon's last exhale. You have lived your whole life on their corpses and never been told.
This is The Sundering Rite, a dark fantasy game of desperate survival, buried truth, and the hard-won light that people make for one another in the dark.
What Kind of Game Is This?
This is a Dungeons & Dragons 5e game, but you do not roll dice for every step. Most of the time, the story carries you: you speak, you choose, you act, and the world answers. When the stakes spike — a blade at your throat, a plague at the gate, a god's pact about to snap — the dice come out, and your fate hangs on a throw. We call this hybrid resolution: narrative by default, the rules when it matters.
You are not meant to optimize your way to safety. You are meant to be someone in a broken world and find out what you do when everything is on the line.
What Is This World?
Long ago, a King struck a bargain with a devil to save his crown. He got what he paid for, and so did everyone else. The bargain festered into the Gilded Rot — a plague that gilds the flesh and hollows the soul, turning the afflicted into glittering, smiling things that are no longer quite people.
Now three dragon eggs rest in the world's hidden places, and they are about to hatch. What stirs inside them — salvation, ruin, or something that simply does not care about either — no one living can say. What you can say is this: the world is waiting to be remade, and it is waiting on you.
What Happens Here?
Stories in The Sundering Rite are built from:
- Desperate people doing terrible and tender things to protect what little they have.
- Hidden truths buried under centuries of comfortable lies — about the dragons, the King, the Rot, and yourselves.
- Moral choices where no answer is clean, and the "right" road still costs someone you love.
You will not save the world in a single night. You will save a village, a friend, a single child with a fever. And that will be enough to keep going.
What Is the Tone?
Dark, but never cold. The horror here is real — gilded corpses, broken oaths, hunger in winter — but so is the warmth. A shared loaf. A song in a ruined tavern. A promise kept when keeping it was the harder road.
Your heroes are humble, not chosen. Their victories are earned, never handed down. When light comes, it comes because someone dragged it up from the dark with bleeding hands.
What Do You Need to Play?
Little, and all of it ordinary:
| You Need | Why |
|---|
| A few friends | The world is meant to be faced together. |
| Dice (d20 and a few others) | For the moments that matter. |
| A character | Someone to carry the story — see below. |
| This book | Your guide through the Rite. |
No experience required. No destiny required. Only a willingness to step onto dragon-bone soil and find out who you become.
Begin With Yourself
Every story in this world starts with a person — not a prophecy, not a bloodline, but a living, flawed, hopeful person standing at the edge of something vast.
Turn the page, and make your character. The eggs are already cracking. The world will not wait for you to feel ready.
