Masquerade and Secrecy
The Masquerade is the vampire society's most important rule: mortals must never learn that vampires exist. It is not a tradition — it is a survival mechanism. If mortals learn the truth, they will hunt you. They will destroy you. They will burn your cities to the ground.
What the Masquerade is
The Masquerade is the collective effort to hide the existence of vampires from mortals. It operates on three levels:
- Individual: Each vampire must maintain their own secret identity
- Social: Vampire society must enforce the Masquerade through law and punishment
- Supernatural: Vampire powers must be hidden from mortal perception
Individual Masquerade
Every vampire must maintain a convincing mortal identity. This means:
- Having a valid Mask (fake identity)
- Feeding without leaving evidence
- Using powers without witnesses
- Avoiding public displays of supernatural ability
- Controlling the Beast in public
Social Masquerade
Vampire society enforces the Masquerade through law and punishment. The most important laws are:
- The First Tradition: Thou shalt not reveal thy true nature to mortals. Break this law and you are destroyed.
- The Second Tradition: Thou shalt not violate another vampire's territory without permission. This prevents territorial conflicts from becoming public.
- The Third Tradition: Thou shalt never reveal the secrets of another vampire. This prevents vampires from exposing each other to mortals.
Supernatural Masquerade
Vampire powers must be hidden from mortal perception. This means:
- Using powers only when necessary
- Using powers only when unobserved
- Using powers only when the consequences are manageable
- Cleaning up after power use
Masquerade violations
A Masquerade violation occurs when mortals learn about vampires. Violations are graded by severity:
Violation severity
| Severity | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Minor | A few mortals know; evidence is limited | A victim survives an attack and tells a friend |
| Moderate | Many mortals know; evidence is widespread | A video of a vampire using powers goes viral |
| Major | Mortals organize against vampires; evidence is public | A vampire hunter publishes a book about vampires |
| Severe | Mortals declare war on vampires; evidence is undeniable | A vampire is captured on national television |
Consequences of violations
| Severity | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Minor | Warning, community service, or a small fine |
| Moderate | Loss of Status, public shaming, or a significant fine |
| Major | Loss of a Background, exile, or a Blood Hunt |
| Severe | Destruction, Final Death, or a blood hunt |
Secrecy and evidence
Secrecy is the art of hiding evidence. A vampire who maintains secrecy leaves no trace of their existence. A vampire who fails to maintain secrecy creates evidence that can be used against them.
Types of evidence
| Type | Description | How to hide it |
|---|---|---|
| Physical | Blood, bodies, wounds, property damage | Clean up, dispose of evidence, use powers to erase |
| Digital | Videos, photos, recordings, social media | Hack, delete, corrupt, or discredit the evidence |
| Testimonial | Witness accounts, victim statements | Silence, memory alteration, or intimidation |
| Forensic | DNA, fingerprints, trace evidence | Avoid leaving evidence, use supernatural powers |
Evidence investigation
When mortals investigate evidence of vampires, they follow a process:
- Discovery: Someone finds evidence
- Analysis: Experts examine the evidence
- Interpretation: Experts form conclusions
- Action: Someone acts on the conclusions
A vampire can interrupt this process at any stage by destroying evidence, discrediting witnesses, or eliminating investigators.
Masquerade maintenance
A vampire maintains the Masquerade through:
- Feeding carefully: Leave no victims, no witnesses, no evidence
- Using powers discreetly: Use powers only when necessary and unobserved
- Maintaining a Mask: Keep a convincing mortal identity
- Controlling the Beast: Avoid public displays of hunger, rage, or power
- Cleaning up: Remove evidence after every incident
- Monitoring information: Watch for mortals who are getting too close
Feeding and the Masquerade
Feeding is the most common source of Masquerade violations. A vampire who feeds carelessly leaves victims, witnesses, and evidence. A vampire who feeds carefully leaves nothing.
- Feed from willing victims: Consensual feeding leaves no evidence
- Feed from animals: Animal feeding is safe but unsatisfying
- Feed from blood banks: Stolen blood is safe but risky
- Feed from the dead: Dead bodies don't talk, but they leave evidence
Powers and the Masquerade
Supernatural powers are the most dangerous source of Masquerade violations. A vampire who uses powers in public risks exposure.
- Use powers privately: Use powers only when unobserved
- Use powers discreetly: Use powers that don't attract attention
- Use powers carefully: Use powers that don't leave evidence
- Clean up after powers: Remove evidence of power use
Masquerade and Touchstones
Touchstones are mortal people who anchor a vampire to their humanity. But Touchstones also represent a Masquerade risk. A Touchstone who learns the truth about vampires may:
- Become a threat to the Masquerade
- Become a target for other vampires
- Become a victim of the vampire's Beast
- Become a liability to the vampire's secret identity
Protecting Touchstones
A vampire should protect their Touchstones from:
- Learning the truth: Keep your nature secret from your Touchstone
- Being targeted: Protect your Touchstone from enemies
- Being harmed: Protect your Touchstone from the Beast
- Being exposed: Protect your Touchstone from the Masquerade
Touchstone complications
Touchstones create complications:
- A Touchstone may discover your secret
- A Touchstone may be targeted by your enemies
- A Touchstone may be harmed by your Beast
- A Touchstone may be used against you
- A Touchstone may die, causing Humanity loss
