Player's Handbook · Chapter 16

Beast and Frenzy Compendium

The Beast is not a separate entity. It is the vampire's survival instinct stripped of empathy, identity, and restraint. Frenzy is the Beast taking control. This chapter explains what the Beast is, how frenzy works, how to resist it, and what happens afterward.

1. What the Beast is

The Beast is the part of the vampire that wants to feed, dominate, destroy, or flee. It is always present, always hungry, and always watching for an opportunity. The Beast does not care about relationships, reputation, or Humanity. It cares about survival and satisfaction.

The Beast's desires

The Beast wants:

  • Blood: to feed whenever hunger rises
  • Dominion: to control the people and places around it
  • Destruction: to eliminate threats with overwhelming force
  • Escape: to flee from danger before it can be destroyed

The Beast does not plan. It reacts. It seizes the nearest opportunity and acts with total commitment.

The Beast and Humanity

Humanity is the barrier between the vampire and the Beast. As Humanity drops, the Beast gains more influence. A vampire with high Humanity may resist the Beast easily; a vampire with low Humanity may struggle to remember why restraint matters.

2. What frenzy is

Frenzy is the moment the Beast takes control. It is a supernatural state of heightened emotion, strength, and violence that overrides the vampire's normal behavior. Frenzy is not a punishment for playing badly. It is a dramatic event that reveals what the Beast wants.

Types of frenzy

TypeTriggerBehaviorEndings
Rage FrenzyInsult, injury, frustrationFight, destroy, dominateThe threat is eliminated or the vampire is restrained
Fear FrenzyTerror, danger, supernatural threatFlee, hide, escapeThe danger passes or the vampire finds safety
Hunger FrenzyHunger 5, feeding opportunity, blood scentFeed, bite, drainThe hunger is satisfied or the vampire is restrained
Protective FrenzyThreat to a bonded person, territory, or identityFight, shield, destroyThe protected person or place is safe

3. When frenzy occurs

Frenzy occurs when:

  • A vampire reaches Hunger 5 and is presented with a feeding opportunity
  • A vampire suffers a messy critical or bestial failure with a Hunger die
  • A vampire is subjected to extreme fear, rage, or emotional pressure
  • A vampire is provoked by a supernatural power such as Presence, Dominate, or another influence
  • A vampire is pushed past their breaking point by a dramatic event

The Storyteller should announce the frenzy risk before the roll. The player should know that failure may result in loss of control.

4. Resisting frenzy

When a frenzy risk appears, the vampire may resist with Resolve + Composure at a difficulty set by the pressure:

  • Difficulty 2 – mild pressure, a small hunger, a minor insult
  • Difficulty 3 – moderate pressure, a serious hunger, a personal insult
  • Difficulty 4 – severe pressure, extreme hunger, a public humiliation
  • Difficulty 5 – extraordinary pressure, supernatural reinforcement, or a major Beast event

Spending Willpower

Spend 1 Willpower to reroll up to three failed regular dice. Hunger dice cannot be rerolled.

Outcome

ResultEffect
FailureThe vampire enters frenzy
SuccessThe vampire holds on; no frenzy
1 extra successThe vampire holds on and gains a moment of clarity or a dramatic opportunity
2+ extra successesThe vampire holds on and may act freely with +1 die on their next roll
Critical successThe vampire holds on and the Beast is temporarily silenced

5. Acting in frenzy

When a vampire is in frenzy, the player loses control of the character's behavior. The Beast chooses the immediate action based on the type of frenzy:

Rage frenzy

The Beast fights. The vampire attacks the nearest threat with maximum force. They use their most powerful attack pool and ignore defense, armor, and consequences. They do not stop until the threat is eliminated, they are restrained, or they are incapacitated.

Fear frenzy

The Beast flees. The vampire runs from the source of fear with total commitment. They ignore obstacles, allies, and consequences. They do not stop until they are safe, they are restrained, or they are incapacitated.

Hunger frenzy

The Beast feeds. The vampire attacks the nearest source of blood with total commitment. They bite, drain, and ignore the victim's condition. They do not stop until the hunger is satisfied, they are restrained, or they are incapacitated.

Protective frenzy

The Beast protects. The vampire fights to defend a bonded person, territory, or identity. They ignore their own safety and attack the nearest threat to the thing they are protecting. They do not stop until the threat is eliminated, they are restrained, or they are incapacitated.

6. Ending a frenzy

A frenzy ends when:

  • The frenzy type is satisfied (the threat is eliminated, the danger passes, the hunger is satisfied, the protected thing is safe)
  • The vampire is restrained by another character
  • The vampire is incapacitated
  • The vampire succeeds on a Resolve + Composure roll at +1 difficulty beyond the original frenzy difficulty
  • The vampire spends 1 Willpower and succeeds on a Resolve + Composure roll to regain control

Regaining control

A vampire may attempt to regain control during frenzy by spending a major action and rolling Resolve + Composure at +1 difficulty beyond the original frenzy difficulty. If successful, the vampire regains control but suffers a condition such as Shaken, Fixated, or Withdrawn.

7. Aftermath of frenzy

A frenzy always creates consequences. The vampire may:

  • Injure or kill an ally, a bystander, or a bonded person
  • Destroy a valuable object, a piece of evidence, or a relationship
  • Expose the Masquerade through public violence
  • Suffer a Humanity consequence for the violation
  • Gain a long-term condition such as Obsessed, Haunted, or Broken
  • Lose a Background, Status, or relationship

The aftermath should be visible, meaningful, and lasting. A frenzy is not a free pass for violence. It is a dramatic event that changes the character and the story.

8. Beast and Hunger

Hunger is the fuel of the Beast. The higher the Hunger, the more likely a frenzy will occur and the more violent it will be.

Hunger and frenzy risk

HungerFrenzy riskDifficulty modifier
0–1Minimal+0
2–3Moderate+0
4High+1
5Extreme+2

At Hunger 5, the vampire is at constant risk of frenzy. Every feeding opportunity, every emotional pressure, and every supernatural cost increases the chance of a Beast event.

Feeding and frenzy

A vampire who feeds during frenzy satisfies the hunger but creates a dramatic consequence. The feeding may:

  • Kill the victim
  • Create a witness
  • Expose the Masquerade
  • Create an addiction or dependency
  • Leave a condition such as Humbled or Exposed

9. Beast and Humanity

A vampire with low Humanity is more likely to frenzy and more likely to enjoy it. A vampire with high Humanity is more likely to resist and more likely to suffer afterward.

5–7No modifierModerate consequence
2–4–1 die on frenzy resistanceSerious consequence

Humanity loss

A frenzy that results in serious harm, death, or a major Masquerade violation may require a Humanity test. The vampire must roll Resolve + Composure at a difficulty set by the violation:

  • Difficulty 2 – minor harm, no witnesses
  • Difficulty 3 – serious harm, few witnesses
  • Difficulty 4 – death, public witnesses
  • Difficulty 5 – murder of a loved one, total Masquerade breach

If the test fails, the vampire loses 1 Humanity and gains a condition such as Haunted, Broken, or Obsessed.

10. Storyteller guidance

When running the Beast and frenzy, keep the following principles in mind:

  • Announce the frenzy risk before the roll
  • Give the player a chance to resist
  • Describe the Beast's behavior in vivid, specific terms
  • Allow the player to describe the aftermath
  • Create consequences that matter
  • End the frenzy before it becomes a permanent penalty
  • Use frenzy to reveal character, not to punish the player

A well-run frenzy is a dramatic event that reveals what the Beast wants and what the vampire is willing to do to stop it. A poorly run frenzy feels like a punishment for playing badly. Always ask: what does this frenzy reveal about the character, and what does it cost them to resist?
