Builder's Manual · Chapter 5

Writing Techniques and Scale Reach

A Technique needs a clear trigger, effect, cost, limit, and scope. The GM should be able to answer 'does this apply here?' from the record itself.

Use scaleReach sparingly. Reach 0 is normal. Reach 1 lets a specialist contest one-tier-higher problems in a narrow domain without raising general Tier. Reach 2 should be rare, expensive, conditional, or transformational because it can bridge a gap the core otherwise treats as Beyond Reach.

Never write 'you count as one Tier higher' without naming the action scope. Prefer 'for crossing distance and evading moving hazards' or 'for redirecting a physical force you can intercept'. Limits are mechanical boundaries, not disclaimer text.

Mastery should deepen or broaden the same Technique without replacing the Path's Tier ladder. It can add efficiency, precision, targets, setup options, or a new interaction. If mastery routinely grants general Scale, Tier stops meaning anything.
