Player's Handbook · Chapter 6

Making a Character

A Progression character needs six decisions.

  1. Concept: who are you before the numbers?
  2. Path: what kind of growth fantasy are you pursuing?
  3. Tier: where on this World's ladder do you begin? Most campaigns start at the first playable Tier.
  4. Ratings: assign the active System Profile's starting spread. In the default profile that is +2, +1, +1, +0 across Force, Finesse, Insight, and Resolve.
  5. Techniques: take the starting Techniques offered by your Path or the World's creation rules.
  6. Goals: write at least one thing you want badly enough that growth can complicate it.

Tier sets your broad Scale. Path defines how you advance. Techniques define the capabilities you can apply now.

The rating follows the approach you describe. If you stop moving carefully and try to overpower the same obstacle, use the rating for that new method.
