Builder's Manual · Chapter 5

Build the Social Web

Create Relationship files for pairs whose connection will recur. Do not create a complete matrix for every possible pair. Start with bonds that already contain history, leverage, loyalty, attraction, resentment, obligation, rivalry, or a public label that affects what others do.

Preserve asymmetry. If every relationship has identical A→B and B→A state, you are rebuilding an approval meter with extra fields.

Use Memory selectively for defining personal history. The observable event and the remembering character's interpretation are separate on purpose. Two people can carry different meanings from the same night.

Groups should connect characters without replacing individual motives. A family can demand loyalty while different members disagree about what loyalty requires. A company can want the merger while one executive wants power and another wants stability.

Use possessions only when they matter socially: gifts, keepsakes, evidence, status symbols, keys, letters, contracts, heirlooms, or practical objects that can change access or meaning. Heartline does not need an exhaustive shopping catalog unless the World itself needs one.
