Player's Handbook · Chapter 7

The World & Its Threads

The world is bigger than your journey, and it is not waiting for you. Towns have atmospheres and secrets. Routes have wildlife with habits and territories. And all around you, situations are already in motion — the world's problems, ticking whether you act or not. Those are threads.

Places

Every location in the game is described by what you can sense there, who lives there, and what's under the surface. Before you act, the GM paints the scene: the smell of the docks, the weight of the weather, the way people don't meet your eyes. Ask questions. Wits finds what's hidden, Charm finds who's willing to talk, and a good question is worth more than a good roll.

A place's secret is something true that nobody has told you yet — a basement, a deal, a body of water that isn't what it seems. Secrets are not traps; they are the reason the place is worth a second visit.

Wildlife

The wild is not a random encounter table. The creatures of a route have habits, territories, and moods — a pack of Houndour that hunts at dusk, a Magikarp that floods the shallows in spring, a rare sighting that everyone in town insists is a rumor. Rarity is written into each species: common and uncommon you can find with patience; rare takes real effort; migratory, not native, and rumoured creatures are stories people tell until someone proves them.

Threads

A thread is a situation with a clock on it. Someone is missing. A faction is moving on a town. A rival is two steps ahead of you. A creature is in trouble. Each thread has:

  • Stakes — what's actually on the line.
  • Urgency — how pressing it is: low, medium, high, critical.
  • Who knows — who's aware, and who's lying about it.
  • What happens if it's ignored — the world will not hold still.

Threads move whether you engage or not. When you act, you change their course. When you don't, they escalate — the missing person stays missing, the faction closes its deal, the clock runs out. You will never be able to catch every thread. Choosing which ones to chase, and which to let burn, is the shape of your story.

Your place in it

You are not a hero the world is waiting for. You're a trainer with a goal, a party, and a life. Threads connect to you through the people you know, the places you go, and the things you want. The best adventures are the ones where the thread you ignored comes back to meet you in a town you thought was safe.
