Player's Handbook · Chapter 9

Three Ways to Sit Down

There is no wrong way in, and the fastest one is genuinely good. Pick whichever suits the hour you have.

Just start playing. Open the Game Start and talk. The GM reads the world's state, sees what has not been built yet, and builds it with you — one question at a time, writing each answer to its file as it lands. Ten minutes to something playable. This is the front door and there is no shame in it.

Build it properly first. Open the Installer in the Orbit chat and say install. The full questionnaire — tone, darkness, magic, technology, limits, dice — then generated people, places, images and maps shaped to your answers. Longer, and much further.

Take somebody else's world. If a world already exists in the project, you can just play it. The engine does not care whether you made it.

Neither of the first two is the lesser one

The fast way produces a real world on the same engine. The deep way produces a more populated one. You can start fast and run the deep build later over the top — it reads what already exists before it writes anything, so nothing you made in the first ten minutes is wasted.

Anybody who tells you the quick path is the beginner path is wrong, and the system is written to say so out loud.

Before your first scene

Two things, thirty seconds:

  • Scene State has a real time, date, weather and location — no bracket text
  • GM Operating Principles is pinned — the one that fails silently

Then open the Game Start and type something. That is it. Go.
