Power Systems, Abilities, Equipment, and Resources
The mechanical side of LWE is modular. It is designed to support fantasy magic, cultivation, superhero powers, cybernetics, mundane professions, social systems, survival rules, or no formal combat system at all.
Power Systems define the rules of a category
A Power System explains how a family of extraordinary or specialized capabilities works:
- Source
- Costs
- Limits
- Recovery
- Taboos
- Social meaning
- Failure thresholds
- Advancement
- Compatibility with other systems
- Resource definitions
Examples include magic, psionics, divine authority, cultivation, mutations, technology, martial disciplines, hacking, or supernatural contracts.
Create the Power System before creating dozens of individual powers. Otherwise every Ability may invent its own rules and the setting will drift.
Abilities define what someone can do
An Ability is a capability granted by origin, power, talent, mutation, pact, equipment, training, or another source.
Good Ability design includes:
- Clear effect
- Activation and range
- Cost or strain
- Limits
- Requirements
- Failure mode
- Counterplay
- Misuse consequences
- Possible evolution
An ability should not become “the character can do anything vaguely related to this word.” Limits and counterplay are part of the world’s identity, not punishments added after the fact.
Techniques define learned application
A Technique is a trained method, form, maneuver, procedure, or specialized application. It can belong to a Power System or relate to an Ability, but it usually represents how skill is applied rather than an innate capacity.
Examples:
- A sword form
- A spellcasting method
- A negotiation technique
- A medical procedure
- A stealth maneuver
- A cultivation art
- A vehicle maneuver
- A ritual process
Techniques can track training method, cultural context, difficulty, mastery, requirements, risks, and progression.
Equipment grants external capability
Equipment covers weapons, armor, tools, relics, devices, clothing, consumables, implants, or other carried assets.
It can track:
- Owner and storage location
- Condition and durability
- Charges
- Passive or equipped effects
- Granted Abilities or Techniques
- Requirements
- Maintenance
- Reliability
- Symbolic importance
Only use durability, charges, maintenance, and reliability when they matter to the experience. A political campaign does not need to track the durability percentage of every pen.
Vehicles support travel and mobile assets
Vehicles can represent cars, ships, mounts, mechs, aircraft, magical vessels, spacecraft, or other transportation with meaningful capability.
They may track crew, operator, capacity, fuel, integrity, ammunition, capabilities, routes, damage conditions, and maintenance.
A simple taxi does not need a full Vehicle record unless it becomes a recurring asset. The party’s starship probably does.
Resources are world assets, not just character points
Resource records track commodities, materials, supplies, currencies, political assets, energy sources, or anything whose availability and control matter to the world.
They can support:
- Supply and demand
- Scarcity
- Market differences by location
- Controlling Factions
- Crisis review
- Price multipliers
- Sources and uses
This is different from a Character resource such as stamina, mana, or resolve. Character resources are defined by the Ruleset or Mechanic Packages and stored in the Character’s current state. World Resources represent things that exist and circulate in the setting.
A clean ownership example
Suppose a world has blood magic.
- The Power System defines what blood magic is, its costs, taboos, recovery, and social consequences.
- An Ability defines “Crimson Sight.”
- A Technique defines “Vein-Sealing Form,” a trained application.
- A Mechanic Package grants novice blood-mage resources and starting techniques.
- A Character stores their current blood reserve, learned powers, and conditions.
- A ritual knife is Equipment that modifies cost or grants an effect.
- Rare saint-blood is a world Resource controlled by a Faction.
Each record has one job. The system stays understandable because no single Character sheet needs to explain the entire discipline.
Do not duplicate grants
When a package or item grants an Ability, reference the Ability. Do not paste its full rules into the package, item, and Character notes. The link is the connection; the Ability remains the canonical definition.
The same principle applies to conditions, attributes, resources, and techniques. Shared definitions live once. Personal state records only what is currently true for that person.
