Legacy, History, and Successor Systems
The Legacy and Successor systems are for worlds where consequences outlive the original scene, character, era, or campaign. They are powerful, but they are optional. Do not activate generational machinery merely because the file types exist.
Legacy records lasting meaning
A Legacy tracks how a person, Event, symbol, institution, sacrifice, disaster, or achievement continues affecting the world.
It may include:
- Originator and origin Event
- Symbols
- Supporters and opponents
- Controversy
- Current meaning
- Impact across audiences, Factions, or Locations
- Future potential
- Whether the Legacy is still active
A Legacy is not simply “this happened in the past.” It means the past is still exerting pressure on the present.
Examples:
- A fallen hero becomes a political symbol.
- A ruined city changes regional law and architecture.
- A villain’s doctrine survives through followers.
- A peace treaty becomes sacred, resented, or deliberately misremembered.
- A player’s mercy creates a cultural tradition generations later.
Eras organize historical change
An Era defines a historical period through its rules, dominant powers, defining Events, and what ended it.
Use Eras when the setting’s history has meaningful phases. A modern slice-of-life project may need only one current Era. A reincarnation epic may require many.
Successor Records capture the handoff
A Successor Record summarizes what an ending passes forward:
- Major choices
- Inherited changes
- Affected descendants
- Unresolved inheritance
- Future story potential
- Outcome type
This can support heirs, reincarnation, apprentices, mantles, institutions, successor states, or a new campaign in the same world.
Successor Hooks prepare future stories
A Successor Hook is a possible future entry point with activation requirements:
- Required Era
- Required descendant
- Required World State
- Trigger condition
- Affected Characters or Locations
- Potential starting situations
A Hook should remain dormant until its conditions are actually true.
Descendant Lines and inherited bonds
A Descendant Line tracks what passes through a family, bloodline, school, institution, ideology, or metaphysical lineage. Inheritance can include abilities, burdens, expectations, resources, titles, enemies, or unfinished duties.
An Inherited Bond records a relationship obligation passed to someone new: a promise to protect a family, a rivalry inherited from a mentor, a debt attached to a title, or an emotional burden carried by a reincarnated soul.
Historical Burdens and inherited worlds
A Historical Burden records who continues suffering or benefiting from the past, how the burden is exploited, and what redemption may require.
An Inherited World describes the state handed to the next generation or campaign: political changes, cultural changes, remaining threats, stories people tell, and starting opportunities.
When to use these systems
Use them when the campaign asks questions such as:
- What remains after this character is gone?
- Who inherits this power, title, debt, or promise?
- How will history remember this choice?
- What does the next era begin with?
- Which unresolved problems survive the ending?
Do not use them merely to make the archive look grand. A Legacy should have living impact. A Successor Hook should point toward a playable future. An inherited burden should change someone’s choices.
Ending a campaign without freezing the world
At a major ending:
- Resolve or archive finished Missions and Pressures.
- Record defining Events.
- Update Reputation, Relationships, and Memories.
- Create Legacies only for changes with lasting meaning.
- Record unresolved inheritance and successor possibilities.
- Describe the Inherited World.
- Advance the Era when the historical boundary is real.
The goal is not to continue forever. The goal is to let the world preserve what the campaign made true.
