You come into Ashfall the way everyone does: at Level 1, a survivor with useful beginnings and a reason to grow. There is no way to start higher, and there is no shortcut to it.
You start at Level 1 — always
Every new campaign opens with every player at Level 1. The Level 1 foundation gives you a clear starting identity, a small number of useful abilities, basic gear, a real weakness, and something to prepare for. You are a capable beginner, not a finished champion — and that is the point. Growth is earned, and it starts from a honest place.
Choose from the starter survivors offered in the lobby. Each teaches a different core system:
| Starter | Teaches |
|---|
| Kaizen Fracture-Touched Veilblade | Stealth, precision, stealth magic, corruption |
| Mizz Lovell | Society, disguise, persuasion, mindcraft |
| Ashbound Forager | Foraging, survival, cooking, the ashlands |
| Hollow Road Scout | Stealth, mapping, tracking, travel |
| Refuge Bladehand | Melee combat, defense, simple repairs |
| Rune-Scratched Novice | Reading, rune language, light magic |
| Scrap-Smith Initiate | Smithing, repair, toolmaking, mining |
| Sootwell Apprentice | Medicine, water purification, herbalism |
Pick whichever speaks to you. Your level is derived from your earned experience — a fresh survivor is Level 1 no matter what, and that is where your story begins.
What a Level 1 survivor can do
Acting inside your starting skills, you have reasonable competence. Acting outside them, you can still try — but expect harder odds, worse tools, more risk, and the need to practice. Your weaknesses are real, and they exist so preparation, learning, trade, and cooperation have meaning.
Nothing about starting at Level 1 punishes you. It is the foundation every legend is built on.
