D&D 5e (2024)

The gods are real. The kings are desperate. The oaths are breaking. Play warriors, mystics, outcasts, and the chosen of dying gods in a British Isles where belief has consequences, magic leaves marks, and nothing — not power, not faith, not fate — comes without cost.

A dark fantasy set in the Viking Age British Isles — 912 AD

The gods are dying. The kingdoms are breaking. Something has to fill the dark.

The year is 912. Britain is not at peace. It is between wars.

Kingdoms carved by conquest sit uneasily beside each other, held together by treaties no one fully believes, oaths no one entirely keeps, and rulers who understand that the next war is coming — only not yet. Raiders still burn coastal villages and call it survival. Kings preach unity while counting enemies. Priests bless executions and call it mercy. The line between conqueror and neighbor blurs with every passing generation.

This is a grounded, brutal world shaped by Norse, Danish, Saxon, Celtic, and Pictish cultures. Reputation matters. Oaths carry weight. Loyalty to family can matter more than law, and the wrong allegiance in the wrong town can end a life quietly. There are no perfect kingdoms here. No faction without blood on its hands.

The supernatural exists, but it does not announce itself. Forgotten ruins hold things that don't sleep. Seers speak truths that frighten them. Relics from older ages carry power that has outlasted the gods who made them. Most people dismiss all of it — until the moment they can't. Magic in this world is not a tool. It is pressure. It marks those who touch it. It makes them visible in ways they cannot always control.

And beneath everything, something older is failing. The gods are real. They have always been real. But they are not what they were. Some are weakening. Some are dying. The patterns fate once held together are loosening at the edges, and those who read omens for a living have begun to find contradictions where there used to be certainty. The world is not ending all at once. It is ending the way empires end — gradually, then faster than anyone expected.

Characters here are shaped by trauma, ambition, grief, faith, and the particular cruelty of living through an age that hasn't decided what it will become. Victories carry consequences. Alliances fracture. The bold die young and the cautious die wondering what they missed. There is no path through this world that costs nothing.

What you do here will be remembered. Whether that is a comfort depends on what you do.

Glimpses
Author's note

Content Warning: This setting contains mature themes including slavery, violence, religious persecution, and other dark realities of the early medieval world. It is intended for adult audiences.

This world is built on historical foundations — real kingdoms, real rulers, real conflicts — but it takes deliberate creative liberties where the story demands it. The divine is real and active here. The Old Gods and the God of the Church both exist and both exert genuine influence on the world. Which one is right is a question the setting does not answer for you. Magic is tied to role, not tradition or training. If you plan to play a Wyrd-Touched, Fate Chosen, Paladin, Skald, or Rune Reader, read the Magic section under Basic Lore before you begin. The magic system shapes how the world responds to your character in ways that matter from your first scene.

Your character's culture of origin will significantly affect their relationship to faith, law, the supernatural, and other people. Starting location recommendations exist for each ethnic group and are worth reading — not because your choices are locked in, but because the differences are part of what makes the world work.
