Dark Domains: Under the Pale Sun
A folk-horror realm inspired by medieval Europe, under the Pale Sun. Vampire houses collect the Blood Tithe, forests belong to wolves, ghosts sit at dinner, witches keep the marsh bargains, glaciers remember what they buried, chivalric vampires rule by grace, empires split by blood levy, and the oldest vampire city bleeds the world dry.
Folk Horror Under the Pale Sun
It is the year of the Pale Sun. Realms share one uneasy world — and none of them agree what a monster is.
**Varkovia** does not hide its vampires. Six Great Houses rule from black castles and collect a Blood Tithe from villages they call their own. **Bozhen** pretends it exterminated vampires generations ago — every town still hangs garlic, every noble might be compromised, and the Church of St Havel hunts zealously and badly. The **Blackwald** between them is not a country but a forest that answers to Wolf Clans — some raiders, some guardians.
**Moravia** never healed after the Empire died there. Ghosts are part of life: empty chairs left at dinner, rooms already occupied, roadside bells for the dead to hear you coming. Ancestral spirits are politically important — "ask your grandfather, he's downstairs" — and Banshees scream not to harm but to force you to feel what they died carrying.
**Sarkovia** eastward is marsh where the Church never took root. Witches aren't evil here — every village has a Wise Woman or Wise Man who knows charms, curses, herbs and how to pay the rusalka, the vodyanoy, the leshy. The Seven Grandmothers rule in bargain — seven women, seven titles, or one witch seven times.
The **Carpathian Crown** rings Varkovia in snow — ruined castles, abandoned monasteries, silver mines, vampire fortresses and things shifting inside glaciers. The Free Cantons endure: independent valleys where human, dhampir and controlled werewolf keep the same hearth, because survival matters more than purity.
**Gallia** is the western peer-realm, where the Old Empire's road becomes French chalk and vine. Vampires are not counts in black castles — they are the *Graced*, the lily-pale nobility upon whom grace has visibly fallen. An eighty-year succession war between Lily claimants, a Pope selling indulgences against unconsented blood-taking, and chivalry's elegant rule that worthy blood must be *earned*. Gallia says the Sun is pale because the true king has not been crowned. It has said so for thirty years.
**Karovir** is the Twinned Realm — an Austro-Hungarian empire sundered in two, bound by blood levy and an unforgiving Ledger. Two crowns share one body: an Emperor of iron and law in the north, a King of bronze and blood in the south. By the First Accord, neither may cross into the other's half. Both worship the same Verdict. Both feed the same Ledger. The Blood Hussars ride both sides of the border, collecting what is owed.
**Kostantiniyye** is the oldest vampire city in the known world — a walled peninsula where the Golden Horn meets the sea, ringed by Theodosian stone and blood-wards written in tilework. The Sultan sits upon the Throne of Iron and Blood. The Janissaries train in the Hippodrome. The Grand Bazaar trades in blood-credits. The Hammams draw blood in warm water and the God's Mouth speaks. In Varkovia the Tithe is a ledger. In Gallia it is a feast. In Karovir it is a road. In Kostantiniyye the Tithe is a child — and the child never comes home.
You play the people caught between — Hunter, Warden, Hedge Witch, Gravekeeper, Scholar of the Veil, House Vampire, Bloodknight, Dawn-Touched, Beast-Blooded, Grey Speaker, Reeve, Janissary, Blood Hussar, Chevalier Sanglant, Pardonneur, Routier — mortal, vampire, werewolf, dhampir, revenant, ghost-touched or witch-blooded. Two dice, five Attributes, Harm and Hunger. Armor is gamble, conditions are stories, and every roll costs something.
Eight realms, each doing folk horror differently. Varkovia's blood tithe, Bozhen's paranoid denial, Moravia's ghosts, Sarkovia's witches, the Carpathian Crown's Free Cantons, Gallia's chivalric vampires, Karovir's twin empires, and Kostantiniyye's ancient blood city. More places, more archetypes, more horror. Enjoy!
